LOS ANGELES, Ca., September 23, 2004 - One year after its official launch, JunkTheory, a premium, sustainable skincare brand, has set forth a new path to support its mission to reduce plastic waste in the beauty industry. The brand proudly announces a new partnership with 5 Gyres, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to tackling plastic pollution.

The collaboration marks a significant milestone in JunkTheory's commitment to revolutionizing the beauty industry's packaging practices. The core objective of this partnership is to drive systemic change within the beauty industry by promoting eco-friendly packaging solutions and raising awareness about the environmental impact of plastic.

"We're excited to announce our partnership with 5 Gyres," says Justin Wolff co-founder of JunkTheory. "Together, we aim to lead the charge in advocating for aluminum packaging as a superior alternative to plastic."

5 Gyres will play a pivotal role in JunkTheory's initiatives, including participation in events, contributing to educational campaigns, and supporting screenings of their documentary on plastic pollution. Additionally, they will provide vital research endorsing aluminum as a sustainable choice for beauty product packaging.

“Consumers are demanding that brands deliver more sustainable products, which we believe must include a product’s packaging,” says JunkTheory co-founder Allison Mabbott. “This partnership is the first major step in our mission to eliminate harmful plastic from the beauty industry and we’re honored to have teamed up with 5 Gyres.”

Co-Founders Wolff and Mabbott created JunkTheory after taking an unnerving trip to Jakarta where they saw floating islands of plastic first hand and knew they had to do better and could do better.

"5 Gyres is committed to driving solutions in each sector of plastic use, and the beauty industry represents a big opportunity to reduce single-use plastic," commented Sara Mais, Development Director at 5 Gyres. "We are proud to partner with JunkTheory, a recognized leader in sustainability within the beauty sector. Together, we hope to inspire industry-wide adoption of sustainable practices and pave the way for a healthier future for people and the planet."

Both organizations are committed to leveraging their strengths in storytelling, research, advocacy, and innovation to make a lasting impact on sustainability within the beauty industry and beyond.
